I have 30" around the walls and one section goes 60" in width and the other section is 48" with the last 2 feet at 66". I do have access on both sides of the wider areas...

I voted for 3 feet, but I'm partial to 30-32" -- deep enough for scenery/buildings in O scale, but narrow enough to be manageable.
