B urlington N orthern has a nnounced t h e findings o f t wo studies r egarding t he o rganization o f t he railroad a nd w hether o r n ot t o r elocate all o r p art o f such from the c urrent S t. P au l h eadquarters . T he o rganization r eport has d etermined t hat s ome 1800 p ositions will be eliminated, o f w hich so me 42 p ercent a re n on -union m anagement. T he p ersonnel c urrentl y holding thos ej ob s would be able t o t ransfer t o o ther p ositions o n a seniority basis. T he r eport f urther r ecommended c hanges in the r ailroad's o rganizational s tructure o f s eve ra l d epartments as we ll as a c ontinued m o ve t o d ecentralize rail o perations . I n c onnection w ith the l atter c oncept the railroad a nnounced t hat t he second s tudy h as co ncluded t hat BN s hould r etain its h eadquarters in St. P au l a lthough t he o perations d epartment wi ll be t ransferred t o Kansas City, Missouri , which offers a m ore c entralized location t o t he 25 - state r ail system. A pproximately 250 p ositions will be affected by the move, which is t o be completed by the s ummer o f 1983. Several closings and r eorgani zat ion o f BN facilities have t aken p lace o r a re in t he pl anning stages. In early August the BN (ex -CB&Q) r oundh ouse a t N orth St. Louis, Missouri was demolished with locomot ive w ork h aving been t rans fe rred t o th e ex- Fr isco fac ili ty at L indenwood Y ard. As o f e a rly O ctober t he Hi ll yard , W a s hington s hops were t o be closed a nd future wo rk assigned t o n earby P arkwater Y ard. A two -unit help er set is used east o f C ha dr on, N ebraska o n t he C &NW. In o ther c oal related news, A ugust was a record-setting m onth for BN when a I ll-c ar A rkansas P ow er a nd Light coal t r a in was loaded in 32 m inut es at the Kerr-McGee mine n ear G illette, Wyoming. T he p r evio us record had been 43 m inutes in 19 75. T his rapid l oading is quite a feat , cons id ering the n or mal average time is 2 \12 t o 3 h ours. T he A P&L t rain was loaded w ith 11 ,218 t on s o f coal ave raging 101 t ons p er ca r wit h a n average ca rJ oading time o f 17.3 second s. I n ad ditio n. BN set two ot her records when o n A ugust 5 so me 185 c oal t r ains were in service systemwide bre aking t he previous single-d ay o perat ion r ecord o f 181 set in 19 81. A nd, o n A ugust 14 , 46 t r ain s were loaded o n t he syste m, b reakin g the o ld s ingle-day l oading record o f 43 . O n A ugust 2 M ilwaukee R oad t rustees so ld 98.3 miles o f its line f rom C ouncil Bluffs to Bayard , Iowa to S hippers C o n sortium f or a r eported price o f $7 .65 million. While the p ee c ars rema in t emporarily s tored at Geneva e ar H ouse , a waiting t heir fut ur e, all cable cars were quickly moved o ut o f t he W ashington - Mason C a bl e House to a storage a rea a t P ier 70. O nce t he cars were removed, w ork b egan immediately t o d ismantle a ll the cab le machi nery. D uring t he r econstruction t he c able car house will be c omp letely cleared o ut, sav in g only the outside brick w a ll s. A ll new cable m aC hin ery will be installed a nd t hen a new u pp er f loor will be constructed fo r cab le c ar inspection a nd s to rage. As p art o f t h e new ca ble winding e quipment , four new m otor s will be inst a ll ed to drive each o f t h e fo ur cables separately t hat a re used to p ower t he entire system.
