T he S an F rancisco M unicipal R ailway continues to o perate P CC c ars o n all five carlines every weekend with the exception o f t he regular M Line S unday b us shuttle, a nd it a ppears t hat t he P CC's will c ontinue t o r un u ntil at least mid-J u ne o f this year. T wo r easons have been given by M uni m anagement f or retaining this weekend P CC service. F irst , the Bay Area R apid T ransit D istrict ( BART), w hich shares many o f the M arket S treet S ubway s tations w ith M uni , does not s tart p assenger o perations o n S undays until 8:00 a . m. , two h ours a fter t he first d aytime s treetcars begin service, and B ART is r esponsible for o pening a nd c losing the entrances t o t hese subway stations. B ART w ould have to s tart e arlier o r c hanges would have to be made to the s tation e ntrances if M uni is t o have different operating hours t han B ART. S econdly, with M uni's c urrent 9 9-car L R V fleet, there a re n ot e nough s pares available during weekdays t o a llow p roper m aintenance s o the weekend time is n eeded t o p roperly inspect a nd p erform r egular servicing o f t he e ntire L R V r oster u ntil m ore cars can be acquired by S an F rancisco. O n S aturday n ight , S eptember 26, a cavalcade o f cars operated for the A RM C onvention's g uests with cars I , 178 , 1006, 1040 a nd w recker 0131. O n t he following M onday a fternoon a dditional f antrips r an w ith P CC cars for the convention. C ar 178 is now on lease t o M u ni for a t least six m onths a nd has been used o n a n umber o ffantrips a s well as in the occasional S aturday I r on M onster service t hat has been running on M arket S treet with C ar I since last J une. M uni has been testing public reaction t o t he o ld cars being used o n M arket S treet with the idea o f r etaining the surface streetcar tracks for a n " old t ime" line. M any p eople prefer to use the surface cars for s hort t rips on M arket S treet r ather t han use the subway because the car stops are much closer t ogether t han t he s ubway stations. This fact was discovered last s pring w hen t he J L ine was still running with P CC c ars o n t he surface while the o ther f our carlines were using L RV's in t he s ubwa y. E xtra P CC's h ad t o be a dded t o t he regular J L ine s chedule to handle the increase in passengers. O n s ome S aturdays d uring the fall, C ar I o r t he 178 was run in full J Line service from the T ransbay T erminal t o t he end o f t he line a t 3 0th a nd C hurch S treets. R eaction f rom p assengers, as well as the news media, was quite favorable. Conversion o f c ertain M uni diesel bus routes t o t rolley coach o peration b egan D ecember 16 as the steep n umber 55 S acramento S treet L ine was c hanged over o n t hat d ay . New overhead wire was installed on S acramento a nd C alifornia Streets using a suspension style c ommon in a n umber o f E uropean cities. T he n umber 45 Greenwich Line went trolley bus effective J anuary 27 , and later this year overhead wire will be installed on the heavily traveled crosstown 24-Divisadero Line. 0

T he n ationwide d ownturn in business d uring the last few m onths o f 1981 a nd t he beginning o f 1982 has affected a lmost all o f t he railroads in this c ountry a nd the Western P acific is n o e xception. M any e mployees in all d epartments a nd crafts have been laid o ff a nd all o f the railroad's General Electric U30B l ocomotives have been in storage a t S tockton, C alifornia since the end o f last year. J ust recently, however, the W P s hipped ten o f these 3 000-horsepower u nits o ff to the U nion P acific to pay off mileage owed to this r oad u nder t he W P-UP p ooled motive power agreement. T he f our-axle G E's are reportedly t o be used on U nion P acific b ranchlines in the midwest d uring t heir t emporary v enture o ff o f h ome rails. As far as the W P's o ther p ooled p ower p artner is c oncerned , Burlington N orthern l ocomotives still operate as far west ( south) as S tockton , b ut i nstead o f the Alco's, F's a nd o ther first g eneration p ower t hat used to be frequent visitors o n W estern P acific rails now new Electro-Motive G P39-2's a nd a few older GP35 's are all t hat c an be seen. Western Pacific covered wagons have been in the news lately as F7 A 921 s pent most o f t he m onth o f J anuary in s nowplow service in the F eather R iver C anyon a nd o n the Highline.
