Westmoreland Coal's Bull itt Complex in Appalachia, VA, on a dreary May 2 5, 1 998. T his facil ity, now more than 3 0 years old, was a principal receiver of Southern extended-height offset hoppers. The hoppers, known as "sh uttle cars" or "yellow bal ls" in this service, broug ht in locally m i ned coal from smal ler loaders and were em ptied via rotary dumper i nto the com plex where the coal was washed, m ixed and blended accord i ng to each customer's needs. The sh uttle cars were switched D an Bourque photo and stored to the left and unit trains were loaded to the rig ht.

I 've found this leaves them j ust about the right di ameter. I i nserted them into small holes drilled under the sides i l l s . t hese cars, as J i ntend to d o , the unit c o s t per car i s well under ten dollars. What a deal ! I first sprayed the entire car black with an airbrush and Testors Flat B l ack. This leaves a more consi stent and realistic color when the red is s p rayed. The e n t i re model was painted with Floquil Boxcar Red and left to d ry. A l i g h t s p ray of Te s t o rs G l o s s c o te allowed the decals to set better. For the her alds and numbers, I used Microscale 87- 1 3 . For the data, I used M i c r o s c a l e 8 7 - 2 . A touch of w h i te paint for the tow loops and some rust-colored pai n t for the g l ad-hands on the air hoses fi n i shed-out the coloring. Because my model rai l road i s set in the late ' 7 0 s , n e a r the end of these c a r s ' l i v e s , I weathered the m o d e l fa i rl y heav i l y. T h e trucks and s i d e s got a l i beral s p ray of Testors F S 302 1 9 Tan fol l owed b y a l ighter spray of F l a t B l ac k . I d r y b r u s h e d s o m e homemade rust color over the sides to high l ight the rivets, and that's i t ! Now I h ave a n i ce l i t t l e model of a Southern shuttle car. If you build several of
