J ust l i ke many modelers, the real rai l roads are always l oo k i n g for ways to extend the l i fe of o l d but sti l l useful e q u i p m e n t . O ne rai lroad noto rious for stretc h i n g the l i fe of equipment i s the Southe rn . The Southern roster of the I 960s, ' 70s, and even the early ' 80s, was fu l l of old, refurbished 40' box cars and several models of "re-model ed" hoppers. The S o u thern was one of the first ra i l roads to purchase large n u mbers of 1 00ton hoppers i n the 1 960s, but they sti l l had

thousands of older 5 5 -ton twins w i th years of l ife left i n them. Although many of these hoppers spent the rest of their days i n near original condition, many others received an 1 8 " height extension. According to the July I 968 Official Rail way Equipment Register, t he Southern had several groups of these modified hoppers. Most of the hoppers were pulled from vari ous orders of 5 5-ton offset cars bu ilt in the early 1 940s and placed into classes 1 060001 06499 (500 cars) and 1 1 0000- 1 1 0643 ( 644 cars). Later ORERs l i st another large class,

1 03000- 1 03299 (300 cars). According to the
S outhern Railway Color Gu ide to Freight and Passen g e r Eq u ip men t b y J a m e s Kinkaid, the I 1 0000-series cars were modi fied sometime in 1 965. The O RER l i sts the modified cars with the fol l ow i ng stats: inte rior length 3 3 ', i nterior width 1 0 ' 4 ", outside length 36' 9 ", height from rail 1 2 ' 2 ", cubic feet 2,592 (compared to 1 0 ' 8" and 2 , I 45 for unmodified cars), and capacity I 1 0,000 Ibs. The simple 1 8 " extension expanded the cars' cubic capacity by nearly 20% . This would a l l ow the load capacity to be fu l l y maxed-
