About the newest facility servicing the Chicago Union Station complex when Amtrak was formed was Santa Fes 21st Street passenger yard. Although those are Amtrak trains in this September 1973 photo, the cars are largely ex-Santa Fe El Capitan cars that used to end their run at Dearborn Station. Again we see service platforms between each track, with hose cabinets, lights and other service facilities. There is a car washer on the right and brand new Amtrak-purchased passenger locomotives EMD SDP40Fs just beyond the Santa Fe passenger locomotive facility.
