A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
occurring throughout the West . The new Washington Central operation reported in this issue is only one of an increasing number of such new enterprises. And we note that rather than two- or five-mile long branches, more of these new short lines are in the lOO -mile-plus category. Southern Pacific Santa Fe Corporation is pulling out all the stops to get its derailed merger petition back on track and we wouldn't be surprised to see a negotiated settlement in early 1 98 7 . Big winners in the amended deals will be Rio Grande and Union Pacific-and those along the Southern Pacific system who otherwise would face a most uncertain future. -JIM WALKER
