he Fruehauf stainless steel van (semi trailer) was a product of the 1950s. The technology for these trail ers somewhat paral leled the stainless steel technology used for the fa mous B udd fluted-side passenger cars. In fact, Fruehauf built their trailers using the technology pioneered by B udd. The stainless steel van trai ler was more the favorite of trucking companies than rail roads. FiTst, Fruehauf trailers had long been a favorite of over-the-highway op erators. of stai n less steel trailer construction, and they were not to be d i sappointed. These trailers were almost indestructible in over the-road or l i ne haul service. As tra i l ers became larger, t h e older and s maller stainless steel trai lers became i neffic ient, but they were i n such good shape many were downgraded to local p ick-up and del i very service where the smal ler trail ers were more desirable. Many stainless steel vans remain as storage tra i lers today, some 50 years later. Sunsh i ne Mode ls is the latest model man ufacturer to produce the Fruehauf fluted s ide stainless steel van trai ler i n HO scale. It is offered with decals for several major

trucking companies known to have oper ated these trai lers. Let's exami ne how th i s k i t goes together a n d what w e c a n d o to make it a realistic addi tion to our h ighway fleets. And the rai lroads shou l d not be forgotten either. Many new trailers were del i vered to dealers or final users by rai l . The Sunshine k i t i s not d i fficult t o b u i l d at a l l . The toughest part is the cleanup of the res i n castings, the price we pay for such accurate model s of lesser-known proto types. You w i l l end up with the fol lowi ng components: the one-piece body, floor, dol l y legs (2) with wheels (4), suspension members, wheels, tires and bu mper.
