    From Don A. Hansen

On the 9th of May, the McCloud River Railroad took delivery of their three new 2,000 horsepower EMD-built SD-38 units at Lookout, California, early in the evening. The units were delivered by the Great Northern.

The McCloud's eight Baldwin units, one of which had never turned a wheel in revenue service (history of the McCloud River Railroad appeared in Issues 33 & 36; an all-time diesel roster was in Issue #36), were immediately retired.

The railroad thus far has been able to run daily trains on its three lines and perform switching service at the huge lumber mill at The engines are not as limber as McCloud with just the three units. the Baldwins on the McCloud's tight curves and some wheel flange trouble has been reported, but otherwise the units are doing the job faster at less cost.

The new power has been numbered 36, 37 & 38, creating a slight overlap. #36, currently assigned to the Lookout line and pictured above between duties at McCloud, is the second McCloud diesel to bear that number. In late 1963 the McCloud obtained SP Baldwins #5207 and #5204, the former becoming McCloud #3 5 . The #5204 was left in its Southern Pacific colors and used only for parts but was referred to by McCloud as the #36 and that number appears to this day in one of Incidentally, the McCloud colors, formerly red the indicator boxes. and silver, are now orange and silver.

McCloud's present operating schedule calls for two of the units operating to Burney On a daylight run, unless tonnage calls for only The third unit switches the mill at McCloud . At night two one unit. units make the steep climb over the hill to Mt. Shasta City while the third unit goes to Lookout and the Great Northern connection. The out of service Baldwin units are available for sale, with at least two of them reportedly already picked up on option.
